The Pentagon plans to livestream the execution by firing squad of Nidal Hasan, the former Army major convicted of killing 13 people and wounding dozens at Fort Hood, Texas, in 2009.
Hasan is scheduled to be executed at Fort Hood on Dec. 3. President Donald Trump approved the execution on the recommendation of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, according to the Pentagon. Hegseth said the execution would be public so people could see that such crimes carry “serious consequences,” and a Pentagon official said livestreaming details would follow.
A military jury sentenced Hasan to death in 2013 after convicting him of 45 counts of premeditated murder and attempted premeditated murder. The former Army psychiatrist was partially paralyzed after being shot during his arrest.
The execution would be the U.S. military’s first since 1961 and its first by firing squad since 1945. Reuters reported that courts have previously blocked media efforts to televise U.S. executions and that experts described such a broadcast as unprecedented in the country.
The plan drew condemnation Friday. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk’s office told AFP that livestreaming would amount to a public execution and breach the prohibition on torture. Republican Sen. Thom Tillis called streaming it “beyond disgusting,” while Democratic Rep. Adam Smith said it would make a mockery of the legal system.
Legal experts said Hasan could still seek civilian federal court review of his conviction and sentence, potentially delaying the execution.
