South African jurist Navi Pillay won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for her efforts to promote peace and international law, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced.
Committee chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes said Pillay had helped ensure the prosecution of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. Her career has included service on South Africa’s High Court, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court, as well as a term as UN high commissioner for human rights from 2008 to 2014.
Pillay also chaired a UN commission of inquiry that concluded Israel had committed genocide in Gaza, a finding Israel rejected. Speaking at a conference in Germany after the award was announced, she joked that she might share the prize with US President Donald Trump if the audience applauded more.
Hours later, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on the ICC as an institution, expanding earlier measures against its officials. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States would ban transactions with the court to cut off its resources, citing the administration’s opposition to any prosecution of Americans. Washington has also condemned ICC arrest warrants for Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
ICC Deputy Prosecutor Nazhat Shameem Khan said the sanctions were intended to undermine international law but would not stop the court’s investigations and prosecutions. The measures could restrict the court’s access to US-dollar transactions and expose companies providing it services to penalties.
