A year after an October 2025 ceasefire halted large-scale fighting in Gaza, Israeli strikes continue and key provisions of the U.S.-backed peace plan remain unfulfilled.
Gaza’s Hamas-run civil defence service said seven people were killed in separate Israeli attacks, mostly in Gaza City, while Middle East Eye reported eight deaths on Thursday. The reported victims included a woman and child killed in strikes on homes in Gaza City’s Sabra neighbourhood, two people in a vehicle near the Jordanian Field Hospital, and a person shot southeast of Deir al-Balah. Israel’s military said three of those targeted were operatives in armed groups and was checking reports concerning four other deaths.
Gaza’s health ministry says Israeli forces have killed more than 1,400 people since the ceasefire began. The Israeli military says it targets Hamas operatives and accuses the group of ceasefire violations. Five Israeli soldiers and one civilian contractor have died during the same period, according to the military.
The ceasefire secured the exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners and detainees, but proposed steps including Hamas’s disarmament, a phased Israeli withdrawal and new governance arrangements have stalled. Hamas remains armed and Israel retains control over large parts of Gaza.
Humanitarian conditions also remain severe. Physicians for Human Rights Israel said Gaza has no fully functioning hospital or MRI scanner, while UNICEF estimates that 97.5% of its schools have been damaged or destroyed. Most of Gaza’s population remains displaced, with many people living in tents or unsafe structures.
