Hurricane Isaias strengthened Thursday as it moved toward the northern U.S. Gulf Coast, prompting warnings, evacuations and emergency preparations from Louisiana to Florida.
The first Atlantic hurricane of the 2026 season had sustained winds of at least 80 mph early Thursday and was forecast to intensify further before making landfall late Friday or early Saturday. Forecasters said the storm could bring hurricane-force winds, a life-threatening storm surge and heavy rainfall to parts of southern Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.
Hurricane warnings were in effect from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to the Bay-Gulf county line in Florida, while storm surge warnings extended from the mouth of the Mississippi River to Florida’s Suwanee River. Tropical storm warnings covered nearby stretches of Louisiana and Florida.
The National Weather Service forecast 3 to 7 inches of rain across parts of the central Gulf Coast and Southeast through the weekend, with localized totals of up to 15 inches possible in the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend. Officials warned of flash and urban flooding as well as potentially prolonged power outages.
Florida and Alabama declared emergencies in dozens of counties. Mandatory evacuations were ordered in parts of Florida’s Okaloosa County, several school districts canceled classes, and offshore oil producers halted some Gulf production and evacuated platforms.
Isaias became a hurricane Wednesday night, one day short of matching the 1905 record for the latest formation of an Atlantic season’s first hurricane. The storm also brought heavy rain to Mexico’s Gulf states as it passed north of the Yucatán Peninsula.
