Israelis commemorated the third anniversary of the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attacks on Wednesday as Palestinians continued to face deaths, displacement and destruction in Gaza.

Militants killed about 1,200 people in southern Israel and took roughly 250 hostages during the attacks. Survivors and bereaved families marked the anniversary while grappling with continuing trauma and loss. The Times of Israel reported that Hamas described the assault as an “extraordinary military achievement.”

Among those abducted were twin brothers Gali and Ziv Berman of Kibbutz Kfar Aza. They were freed in October 2025 after two years in captivity and are rebuilding their lives while mourning friends and neighbors killed in the attack and its aftermath. More than 60 Kfar Aza residents were killed.

In Gaza, Israeli strikes have continued and the Palestinian death toll has risen above 74,000, according to Gaza health authorities. Palestinians remain affected by widespread destruction and repeated displacement despite a ceasefire that began in October 2025.

Gaza City photojournalist Saher Alghorra, who said he had been displaced six times, has documented mass funerals, ruined mosques and makeshift schools built from humanitarian-aid pallets. A New York Times satellite analysis cited by Colombia One found that Israel had entrenched and expanded its control over parts of Gaza despite the ceasefire.
