Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas postponed legislative elections scheduled for November 28, 2026, and called for simultaneous legislative and presidential elections on September 11, 2027, according to a decree reported Saturday by the official WAFA news agency.
The decree cited “obstacles posed by Israeli measures” and said more time was needed to establish political, security and on-the-ground conditions for “free, fair and inclusive elections.” It called for Palestinians in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza to participate.
Palestinian officials said restrictions on access to Gaza and East Jerusalem for election workers and international observers had complicated preparations. The decree also cited violence and movement restrictions in the West Bank, the withholding of Palestinian tax revenues, and severe security and humanitarian conditions in Gaza. The postponement followed a decision by the Palestine Liberation Organisation’s executive committee and consultations with Palestinian factions and political groups.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar rejected responsibility for the delay, accusing Abbas of using Israel to evade accountability. Reuters reported that officials from Abbas’s Fatah movement and rival Hamas had agreed during talks in Cairo to postpone the vote.
Palestinians last held a presidential election in 2005, when Abbas was elected, and legislative elections in 2006, when Hamas won. The subsequent conflict between Hamas and Fatah left Hamas controlling Gaza and the Palestinian Authority governing parts of the West Bank. Abbas has ruled by decree since his presidential mandate expired in 2009.
