A 48-year-old woman has been charged with first-degree murder after a 7-year-old girl was fatally stabbed on a sidewalk in Chicago’s Chatham neighborhood, police said.
The girl, identified as Eddimar Hernandez-Chacon, was walking with her 17-year-old sister shortly before noon Saturday when Shavon Gayden allegedly grabbed her and stabbed her multiple times. Eddimar was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police described the attack as unprovoked and said bystanders chased Gayden, detained her and held her until officers arrived. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive or said whether Gayden and the child knew each other.
Gayden was charged Sunday. She was expected to appear in court Monday but remained hospitalized, according to a spokesperson for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office. Her hearing was rescheduled for Wednesday, and the Cook County public defender’s office was assigned to represent her.
Gayden’s mother, who requested anonymity, apologized for the stabbing and told ABC7 Chicago that she had struggled to obtain mental health treatment for her daughter.
