Delhi police detained leaders of the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party, protesters, journalists and lawyers on Saturday as authorities sought to prevent a demonstration at Jantar Mantar over alleged irregularities in India’s electoral rolls.
The movement’s founder, Abhijeet Dipke, and co-convenors Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained after arriving in Delhi from Mumbai, according to the group and multiple news reports. Police had denied permission for the protest, while roads were barricaded, Metro stations closed and movement restricted across the capital. Reports varied on the scale of the detentions, ranging from hundreds to several thousand. The Kathmandu Post, citing Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, reported that about 22,000 police and paramilitary personnel were deployed, 45 Metro stations were closed and 250 trains were cancelled.
The protesters are demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing the Election Commission of improperly removing names from voter lists and favouring Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party. The Election Commission and BJP have denied allegations of manipulation. The commission says its nationwide revision is intended to remove dead, duplicate or otherwise ineligible voters.
Journalists from Navbharat Times, Scroll.in and Newslaundry were among those detained, including some away from the planned protest site, The Hindu reported. All were later released. Despite the restrictions and arrests, protest organisers urged supporters to continue gathering wherever police stopped them.
