YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was detained by Delhi Police in Gurugram on Saturday ahead of a planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, according to Scroll.in. Hundreds of other protesters were also detained after police denied permission for the gathering, which was organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and Left-affiliated student groups.
The Delhi protest followed a CJP-led gathering at Bengaluru’s Freedom Park on Thursday against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Rathee, actor-activist Prakash Raj and CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke attended the event, described by organisers as a “people’s tribunal” for Karnataka residents who said their names had been wrongly removed from voter rolls. Rathee accused the Election Commission of lacking transparency and accountability, while Raj demanded that the SIR be scrapped and alleged that Kumar was acting at the behest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
Bharatiya Kisan Union members also protested at district headquarters across western Uttar Pradesh on Saturday. Delhi Police detained a delegation led by BKU national general secretary Yudhvir Singh while it was travelling to Jantar Mantar, The Hindu reported.
Separately, former Bengaluru police commissioner and BJP leader Bhaskar Rao asked the Union Home Secretary to verify Rathee’s citizenship, immigration status and visa conditions following his participation in the Bengaluru protest. Rao said authorities should determine whether Rathee’s activities complied with immigration rules and take action if any violation was established.
