Hurricane Isaias killed two people and knocked out power to hundreds of thousands after making landfall near Destin, Florida, late Friday as a Category 2 storm.
Local authorities said trees fell on homes in Escambia County, Florida, and Birmingham, Alabama, causing both deaths. Isaias came ashore with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph before weakening rapidly as it moved north through Alabama. By early Saturday, it had become a post-tropical cyclone with winds of 65 mph.
The storm brought heavy rain, flooded roads and downed trees and power lines across the Florida Panhandle and Alabama. More than 868,000 customers in Florida, Alabama and Georgia were without electricity early Saturday, according to PowerOutage.us.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis urged residents to remain sheltered and avoid roads. Some Panhandle counties temporarily suspended emergency responses Friday night because conditions were too dangerous. Governors in Florida, Alabama and Mississippi declared states of emergency ahead of landfall.
Although storm-surge and tropical-storm warnings were discontinued, forecasters said Isaias continued to pose flooding and tornado threats as it moved inland. The National Hurricane Center warned of possible flash, urban and river flooding across southern Alabama, the Florida Panhandle and southwestern Georgia, with 4 to 8 inches of rain expected and isolated totals of up to 15 inches. Tornadoes remained possible Saturday across parts of Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas.
