Hurricane Isaias weakened after making landfall near Destin, Florida, late Friday, leaving widespread power outages, flooded roads and downed trees and power lines across parts of Florida and Alabama.
The US National Hurricane Center said Isaias came ashore with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph (169 km/h). By Saturday, it had become a post-tropical storm over southern Alabama, with sustained winds of 65 mph (100 km/h), while continuing to threaten inland areas with flash flooding and strong winds.
More than 664,000 customers in Florida and Alabama were without electricity early Saturday, according to poweroutage.com. Flooding was reported in Destin and southern Alabama, while debris blocked roads in Pensacola and several other communities. Some Florida Panhandle counties temporarily suspended emergency responses during the most dangerous conditions.
Ahead of landfall, residents boarded windows, filled sandbags and stocked fuel. States of emergency were declared in Alabama, Florida and Mississippi, and Florida deployed about 5,000 National Guard personnel. Flights were grounded at several airports, including Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport.
The storm also disrupted Gulf of Mexico energy production. Operators had shut about 1.28 million barrels per day of oil output and 57.35% of natural gas production by October 8, while evacuating 121 staffed platforms and five rigs.
Forecasters warned that storm surge could reach three to five feet along parts of the coast from Dauphin Island, Alabama, to Florida’s Aucilla River.
