Elon Musk has intensified his criticism of Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani over delays to Starlink’s commercial launch in India, sarcastically addressing him as “Prime Minister Ambani” and accusing him of trying to prevent competition.
In a post on X, Musk asked Ambani to “consider allowing Starlink to compete” and alleged that he wanted to maintain “monopolistic exploitation” of Indian consumers. Musk did not provide evidence that Ambani or his companies were responsible for the delay.
Musk argued that SpaceX’s satellite internet service could bring connectivity to underserved areas, expand access to education and global markets, and provide communications during natural disasters. His comments followed earlier posts blaming unnamed “oligarchs” for blocking Starlink and describing the delay as a “crime against the people of India.”
India’s government rejected claims that its treatment of Starlink was unfair. The Ministry of Communications said its authorization framework for satellite services was fair and non-discriminatory, and that security assessments were underway for all three licensed providers. It said the companies were at broadly the same regulatory stage and must demonstrate compliance with security requirements before seeking spectrum assignments.
The three licensed providers are SpaceX’s Starlink, Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications, part of Ambani’s Reliance Industries group. Telecoms Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia also said India does not permit monopolies in any sector.
