Cornell Students Escalate Protests Over Handling of Fraternity Assault Allegations

Cornell University students and faculty have intensified protests over the school’s handling of allegations that a student was sexually assaulted by several Chi Phi fraternity members in October 2024.

On Wednesday, students staged a planned seven-hour sit-in at a campus dining hall and pledged not to spend money on campus. Demonstrators called for changes to Cornell’s disciplinary procedures and for the expulsion or degree revocation of people involved in the alleged assault. Earlier in the week, protesters rallied at the university’s administrative headquarters, Day Hall. Before that demonstration, glass entrance doors were smashed and slogans including “Smash the patriarchy” were spray-painted on the building. Cornell said it was investigating the vandalism.

The accuser, identified as Jane Doe, filed a civil lawsuit in September against Cornell, the Chi Phi chapter, seven former fraternity members and others. She alleges that fraternity members pressured her to consume alcohol and ketamine before several men sexually assaulted her while she was incapacitated. Lawyers for two of the men have denied that they participated in an assault, and other accused men told university investigators that the activity was consensual or that they were not involved. No criminal charges have been filed.

Cornell says it closed the Chi Phi chapter and imposed sanctions, including expulsions and suspensions, after a Title IX investigation. The university’s trustees have appointed former U.S. Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates to review Cornell’s handling of sexual-assault and harassment complaints. The New York attorney general is also conducting a renewed criminal investigation, according to The Associated Press.
