A Russian strike near public buses in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk killed at least 30 people and injured at least 18 on Thursday, Ukrainian authorities said. Some outlets, including CNN and Al Jazeera English, reported a death toll of at least 33.
NPR reported that a Russian-guided bomb exploded beside buses carrying passengers near a bus stop in the Donetsk region city. Public transportation was suspended in the area, and Oleksandr Honcharenko, head of Kramatorsk’s military administration, said subsequent attacks by small Russian drones hampered rescue operations.
The attack came amid a wider wave of Russian strikes that intensified disruptions to Ukraine’s energy system. Emergency power cuts were imposed in Kyiv after an attack on infrastructure important to the capital. The outages interrupted metro and tram services and caused water-supply problems in several districts, according to city authorities and the Kyiv Independent. Electricity had returned to parts of Kyiv’s right bank by early Friday, while areas east of the Dnipro River remained without power.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for additional air-defense equipment, aircraft ammunition and investment in interceptors from NATO countries. He said a Ukrainian delegation would meet U.S. representatives Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff for two days beginning Friday, with strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses among the planned topics.
