Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin, Florida, on Friday evening as a Category 2 storm with sustained winds of 105 mph, bringing damaging winds and heavy rain to the Gulf Coast before weakening as it moved inland through Alabama.

Two deaths were reported in the Southeast. Alabama emergency officials said a person in Birmingham died when a tree fell on a house. Local authorities also reported that a person was killed by a falling tree in Escambia County, Florida, though Gov. Ron DeSantis said Saturday that state officials had not confirmed any storm-related fatalities.

More than 900,000 electricity customers in Florida, Alabama and Georgia were without power early Saturday, according to PowerOutage.us. The total later fell below 800,000. Fallen trees and power lines blocked roads, while flooding prompted road closures in southern Alabama. In Pensacola, officials reported damage to an airport and a hotel whose roof was torn off.

By Saturday morning, Isaias had weakened to a post-tropical cyclone with winds near 35 mph, but officials continued to warn of flash flooding and possible tornadoes. DeSantis said saturated ground and additional rainfall could produce dangerous flooding after the storm’s passage.

Before landfall, energy companies shut about 1.3 million barrels per day of Gulf of Mexico oil production, according to federal regulators. The storm also threatened refineries in Mississippi and Alabama and disrupted tanker traffic.
