Three Saudi nationals, including a Saudia pilot, were killed in two Houthi attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Thursday, Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation said. Several other people of different nationalities were wounded, and a Saudia aircraft and airport facilities were damaged.
Saudia identified the pilot as Captain Hamoud Ali Alkalthami. The Houthis claimed responsibility, saying they launched a ballistic missile at the airport and hit their intended target. The group has warned airlines against using Saudi airspace, except over Mecca and Medina, and says its strikes are retaliation for Saudi attacks on airports in Yemen.
Hundreds of flights from Saudi Arabia were canceled on Thursday, according to Cirium data cited by CNBC. Saudi authorities said Friday that operations at King Khalid International Airport had resumed and air traffic had returned to normal.
The attacks followed other recent strikes on Saudi airports. Al Jazeera reported that three civilians were killed and 36 injured earlier in the week at airports in Abha and Riyadh, while attacks on Jazan and Najran airports wounded at least three people.
The Saudi-led coalition said it had destroyed three Houthi missile launchers and vowed a “firm response.” At a UN Security Council meeting, the United States called on the Houthis to stop attacks on Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s internationally recognized government and urged Iran to end its support for the group.
