Actor Sanjay Dutt has issued two clarifications after saying on the YouTube talk show *Shekhar Tonite* that he could no longer feel peace in India, a remark that drew criticism on social media.
During the Gandhi Jayanti special episode, Dutt praised Indians as large-hearted and hospitable and said he prayed for peace to return. He later performed a roughly five-minute satirical monologue as a fictional prime minister, adopting the style of his Munna Bhai character and referring to Mahatma Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump.
In a statement posted on X on October 4, Dutt said the remarks were part of a scripted conversation intended to be light-hearted and humorous. He compared its spirit to the humour and “Gandhigiri” associated with the *Munna Bhai* films, saying it was meant to convey love, unity and goodwill. He said he had not intended to hurt or disrespect any individual, community or institution and that his words had been interpreted outside their intended context.
Dutt followed with a video clarification in Hindi, saying the scripted remarks were “not, by any stretch,” his personal views, thoughts or feelings. He said he did not want a performance to create misunderstanding about his beliefs.
Host Shekhar Suman subsequently defended Dutt in comments to NDTV, describing the remarks as innocuous and positive. Suman said Dutt loves India and should not be maligned for something he did not mean.
