Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores secured a narrow victory in the mayoral election in Queropalca, a remote district in Peru’s Andes, according to exit-poll results reported by the BBC.
The 45-year-old candidate for the centre-left Ahora Nación party received 229 votes, finishing 25 votes ahead of the second-place candidate from the right-wing Renovación Popular Perú party. Data from Peru’s elections office showed that slightly more than 700 people participated and that Simeon won about 34% of the vote.
Queropalca, which has fewer than 1,000 residents, is in the central department of Huánuco, about 360 kilometres from Lima. Simeon was born in the district, according to his candidate profile.
His forenames, shared with Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini, drew international attention to the local contest. Other Peruvian politicians with names linked to prominent historical figures have previously attracted similar notice. In 2018, Hitler Guesclin Alba Sánchez was elected mayor of Yúngar after defeating a rival named Lenin Vladimir Rodríguez Valverde.
