Hurricane Isaias weakened to a post-tropical cyclone early Saturday after making landfall near Destin, Florida, late Friday and battering the US Gulf Coast with heavy rain and strong winds, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The Category 2 hurricane had maximum sustained winds of 105 mph at landfall. Its winds later fell to about 35 mph as the system moved toward Alabama and the Tennessee Valley.

More than 900,000 customers across the south-east lost power, according to poweroutage.us, with Florida and Alabama among the states most heavily affected. The National Hurricane Center warned that continued rainfall could cause flash flooding, particularly in southern Alabama, the Florida Panhandle and south-western Georgia. Landslides were also possible in the Southern Appalachians.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey said officials were concerned about strong winds, heavy rain and “possible spinoff tornadoes,” urging residents to follow local warnings.

Isaias was the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2026 season. Its October formation came unusually late amid a stronger El Niño, which can increase wind shear over the Atlantic and hinder hurricane development. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had forecast a quieter-than-average season, predicting between two and six hurricanes in its August update.
