U.S. President Donald Trump said Saturday that Ukraine should choose a new president after Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized Washington’s agreement to ease sanctions on Russian diesel exports.
“I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal,” Trump said at the White House, accusing Zelenskyy of failing to end the war with Russia. Trump also warned Kyiv to stop striking Russian oil refineries, arguing that such attacks affect global fuel supplies.
Trump announced Friday that Russia would release an initial 300,000 metric tons of diesel to U.S. and global markets, followed by another 500,000 tons in November. The United States suspended relevant sanctions until April 7. The agreement comes as U.S. diesel prices have risen sharply during the war with Iran.
Zelenskyy called the arrangement a “gift” to Russian President Vladimir Putin and said added export revenue would finance Russian weapons, drones, missiles and personnel. European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas also criticized the sanctions relief, saying it would give Moscow more money to wage war.
The dispute intensified after new Russian attacks on Ukraine. Ukrainian officials said aerial bombs struck residential buildings in the Zaporizhzhia region, killing at least 20 people, including three children, and wounding at least 18. A ballistic missile attack on Kyiv wounded four people, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Zelenskyy said the strikes showed that Russia interpreted reduced economic pressure as permission to continue its attacks.
