Max Verstappen won a rain-affected Singapore Grand Prix sprint and then secured pole position for Sunday’s race, completing a sweep of Saturday’s competitive sessions at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
The sprint began after a 30-minute delay caused by a heavy shower. George Russell passed pole-sitter Verstappen at the start but crashed at the final corner of the opening lap after running onto a wet white line. Russell called the incident a “miscalculation” and accepted responsibility for the mistake.
Verstappen inherited the lead and finished 2.50 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, who had climbed from sixth on the grid. Charles Leclerc placed third. Mercedes driver and championship leader Kimi Antonelli took fourth after McLaren teammates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri collided and spun on the final lap. Liam Lawson, Oliver Bearman, Nico Hulkenberg and Norris completed the points-scoring positions.
In qualifying later Saturday, Verstappen recorded a fastest lap of 1 minute 31.373 seconds to claim his 50th career pole and his first at Singapore. Leclerc qualified second, five-hundredths of a second behind, while Hamilton took third and Antonelli fourth. Norris was fifth.
Russell qualified sixth but will start Sunday’s Grand Prix from the back because of engine penalties. Antonelli’s championship lead over Russell increased from 84 to 89 points after the sprint.
