President Donald Trump rallied with Republican gubernatorial nominee Bruce Blakeman in Syracuse on Friday, urging New Yorkers to elect the Nassau County executive over Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul.
Several thousand supporters attended the event at the Oncenter, according to the New York Post. Trump’s visit caused traffic disruptions around Syracuse, while protesters gathered separately during his appearance. Syracuse.com reported that many of the state’s leading Republicans did not attend. It also identified the first person in line as a Central New York man who had served prison time for the Jan. 6 attack.
During his speech, Trump criticized Hochul and Democratic state lawmakers over legislation that would revise terminology in some laws concerning surrogacy and parentage, including references to “gestating” and “non-gestating” parents. Trump mocked the wording and accused Hochul of supporting other policies related to transgender children and women’s sports. Blakeman also criticized the parentage bill, arguing that it diminished the role of mothers and fathers.
A Hochul spokesperson said the governor “believes mothers are mothers and fathers are fathers” and described the measure as addressing technical legal issues involving surrogacy and parentage. The spokesperson said the legislation would be reviewed and accused critics of making misleading arguments for political purposes.
A Marist poll released Wednesday showed Blakeman trailing Hochul by 11 points, while a Siena University survey the previous month placed him within single digits.
