The Portuguese Football Federation has provisionally suspended captain Cristiano Ronaldo and opened disciplinary proceedings over his decision to leave the national-team camp during the September Nations League window.
Ronaldo, 41, departed after remaining an unused substitute in Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway on September 27. He subsequently missed wins over Denmark and Norway, which left Portugal top of Group A4 with four consecutive victories.
In a statement issued before the suspension, Ronaldo apologised to his teammates and Portuguese supporters, accepting responsibility for leaving camp and saying the federation should punish him without mitigating circumstances. However, he accused head coach Jorge Jesus of twice breaking promises, including an assurance that Ronaldo would play 30 minutes against Norway. Ronaldo said the resulting loss of trust led him to conclude that his presence would harm the squad.
The federation said proceedings were initiated on October 9 and referred to its disciplinary instruction committee the following day, with the investigation designated urgent and closed to the public until it concludes. The duration of any final sanction has not been announced.
Ronaldo said he remains available to represent Portugal after serving any suspension. Federation president Pedro Proença was quoted as saying the federation, coaching staff and players want Ronaldo back and that he expects the forward to return during November’s international break. Ronaldo has since rejoined Al Nassr and scored in the Saudi club’s 3-0 win over Diriyah.
