Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has postponed legislative elections scheduled for November 2026 and set September 11, 2027, as the new date for both legislative and presidential votes, according to the official WAFA news agency.
Abbas’s decree cited “obstacles posed by Israeli measures” and said political, security and practical conditions must be established for “free, fair and inclusive elections” involving Palestinians in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza. It pointed to Israeli military operations, settlement expansion, settler violence, movement restrictions and the withholding of Palestinian tax revenues.
For Gaza, the decree cited severe security and humanitarian conditions, the incomplete withdrawal of Israeli forces, limited reconstruction and restrictions on access for election officials and international observers. The postponement followed consultations among Palestinian factions and a resolution by the Palestine Liberation Organization’s executive committee. Palestinian officials told Reuters that representatives of Abbas’s Fatah movement and Hamas had agreed during talks in Cairo to delay the vote.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar rejected Abbas’s explanation, accusing him of falsely blaming Israel to avoid responsibility. Hamas welcomed the postponement as “a step in the right direction” and called for further talks on rebuilding Palestinian institutions and arranging elections.
Palestinians last held a presidential election in 2005 and legislative elections in 2006, when Hamas won a majority. Abbas has governed by decree since his presidential mandate expired in 2009.
