Indonesian authorities and conservationists have released eight Bornean orangutans rescued from fire-damaged areas into the Batu Nyambu Protected Forest in West Kalimantan.
The group — three mothers with their offspring and two juvenile males — was rescued from Ketapang and North Kayong districts between August and September. Fires had destroyed or fragmented forest habitat, leaving some animals stranded in plantations or isolated among small stands of trees.
Before their release on Friday, the orangutans underwent health checks, treatment where needed and observation at a rehabilitation facility. Officials said all eight were healthy and retained natural behavior. They were released at separate points in the roughly 23,000-hectare forest, which was selected for its canopy cover, food and water supplies, roaming space and links to neighboring forest corridors.
The West Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Agency and IAR Indonesia said they rescued 46 orangutans threatened by fires between August and October 9. Several remain under intensive treatment for burns, malnutrition, severe anemia and other conditions.
Elsewhere in Indonesia, authorities are continuing aerial and ground operations against forest and peatland fires. The government has also tested a Brazilian-made fire suppressant mixed with water in South Sumatra and Kalimantan.
Orangutans are critically endangered. Conservation officials said continued habitat protection is necessary because relocation alone does not address the fires and forest loss displacing the animals.
