YouTuber Dhruv Rathee and several Cockroach Janta Party leaders were released after being detained during a police crackdown on a planned protest in Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Rathee was detained at about 6 a.m. Saturday from his home in Gurugram’s Sector 56 and questioned by Crime Branch officials, according to reports citing police and PTI. He was released at about 2 a.m. Sunday without charges, a Gurugram police spokesperson said. A police source said he could face renewed detention or other legal action if he attempted to reach Jantar Mantar despite prohibitory orders.
CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka, Ratna Singh and Saurav Das were also released. The Indian Express reported that a Delhi court ordered the release of Dipke, Ranka and Das.
The protest, organised by the CJP and Left-affiliated student groups, concerned alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and broader concerns about the Election Commission’s functioning. Police denied permission for the gathering and detained protesters attempting to reach Jantar Mantar and nearby areas. Reports placed the number detained at more than 6,000, while The Hindu cited police sources saying more than 7,000 people were held.
The Bharatiya Kisan Union’s Tikait faction also held protests across western Uttar Pradesh. Delhi Police detained a delegation led by BKU national general secretary Yudhvir Singh while it was travelling to Jantar Mantar.
