U.S. President Donald Trump said Sunday that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to immediately stop attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure, but Kyiv said it had not been informed of an agreement and Moscow offered no immediate confirmation.
“Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding that both parties had agreed and urging them not to break it. He provided no details about its scope, enforcement or duration.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told Axios that Trump’s announcement was “news for me,” but said Ukraine was prepared to participate if Russia also agreed. Zelenskyy later said Ukraine supported a ceasefire and was awaiting details from Washington. Earlier Sunday, he had said Kyiv would halt strikes on Russian oil refineries if Moscow stopped attacking Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
The announcement followed days of public tension between Trump and Zelenskyy. Trump criticized Ukraine’s strikes on Russian refineries and called for the country to choose a new president who would agree to end the war. Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s leadership was for Ukrainians to decide.
Trump also announced Friday that Russia would supply diesel to the United States and global markets after Washington temporarily eased sanctions on Russian fuel. Zelenskyy criticized that decision, arguing that additional Russian energy revenue could support Moscow’s war effort.
