Christa Pike has been discharged from a hospital and returned to the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center in Tennessee after surviving an execution attempt on Sept. 30, her attorneys said Saturday.

In a statement, attorneys Luke Ihnen, Randy Spivey, Stephen Ferrell and Kelly Gleason said Pike was grateful to first responders and her medical team. They said she is receiving medical care in prison and that they are monitoring her recovery.

Pike was hospitalized for several days after receiving two doses of the sedative pentobarbital during the attempted execution. According to NPR, Pike said her arm was burning after the first dose and asked officials to try administering it higher on her shoulder. Spivey, who witnessed the procedure, said she lost consciousness after the second dose but continued breathing and making choking sounds.

Davidson County Chancery Court Judge I’Ashea Myles has ordered prison officials to preserve messages and other evidence connected to the failed execution.

Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 torture and killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a fellow student at the Knoxville Job Corps. Pike was 18 at the time. Her boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, received life in prison without parole for his role in the killing.
