US President Donald Trump said Sunday that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to immediately stop attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure, but he provided no details and neither Kyiv nor Moscow initially confirmed a negotiated agreement.
“Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the announcement was news to him and that Kyiv was awaiting information from Washington. He said Ukraine supported an energy ceasefire, provided Russia also observed it. Moscow did not immediately comment, while the White House offered no clarification about the terms or how the arrangement had been reached.
Earlier Sunday, Zelenskyy said Ukraine was prepared to stop striking Russian oil refineries if Moscow halted attacks on Ukraine’s energy system. After Trump’s announcement, Zelenskyy said Russia had continued striking Ukrainian energy infrastructure, including facilities in Kyiv and the Kharkiv region.
The announcement followed US-led talks in Miami involving Ukrainian, European and NATO representatives. US envoy Steve Witkoff said those discussions covered de-escalation, energy resilience, grain exports, security guarantees and postwar reconstruction.
Tensions between Washington and Kyiv had risen after the United States moved to ease sanctions on Russian diesel. Zelenskyy argued that the decision would help finance Moscow’s war, while Trump criticized Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy sites amid higher fuel prices.
