Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, his sister and Congress lawmaker Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and dozens of other INDIA bloc leaders were detained in New Delhi on Wednesday during a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The lawmakers had travelled by bus toward Jantar Mantar, a designated protest site, after gathering for lunch. Police blocked their route, prompting protesters to leave the buses and confront officers. Videos showed security personnel carrying Gandhi and Vadra into separate vehicles. The Hindu reported that about 80 leaders were detained; Gandhi was held for several hours at Barakhamba Road police station before being released.

Opposition parties accuse the Election Commission of conducting a voter-list revision that disproportionately removes opposition supporters and benefits Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party. The commission and government deny political motives, saying the process is intended to remove duplicate and ineligible entries while retaining eligible voters.

Police subsequently registered three cases naming Gandhi and Vadra over allegations including assaulting and obstructing officers, damaging a police vehicle and participating in an unauthorised demonstration. One constable alleged that protesters surrounded and attacked him and tore his uniform. Congress workers were also accused of puncturing a bus tyre. Gandhi said the legal cases would not stop the campaign.

On Thursday, Gandhi and other opposition lawmakers continued the protests with a silent gathering at Raj Ghat. Unlike the previous demonstrations, it ended without police intervention.
