Hurricane Isaias killed at least four people and caused widespread power outages after making landfall near Destin, Florida, on Friday evening as a Category 2 storm.
Isaias came ashore with sustained winds of about 105 mph, bringing heavy rain and damaging gusts to the Florida Panhandle before weakening as it moved inland through Alabama. By Saturday morning, it had become a post-tropical cyclone with winds of about 35 mph.
Two deaths were reported in Florida and two in Alabama, according to Al Jazeera and an Associated Press report. One Florida victim died when a tree fell on a home. Earlier reports had placed the death toll at two.
More than 900,000 electricity customers in Florida, Alabama and Georgia lost power early Saturday, though the number later fell below 700,000, according to PowerOutage.us. Fallen trees and power lines blocked roads, while flooding prompted closures in southern Alabama. Officials in Pensacola reported damage to an airport and a hotel.
Authorities continued to warn of flash flooding and possible tornadoes across the Southeast despite the storm’s weakening. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said saturated ground and continuing rain could produce dangerous flooding after the storm had passed.
The US Energy Department said it would release up to four million barrels of crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve through an emergency exchange intended to address storm-related supply disruptions.
