Budhi Gandaki flash flood sweeps away homes and bridges in Nepal

A flash flood swept through communities along Nepal’s Budhi Gandaki River in Gorkha district early Sunday, destroying homes and bridges and prompting evacuations across downstream areas.

Authorities said a landslide in or near Chumnubri Rural Municipality blocked the river or one of its tributaries before the accumulated water broke through and surged downstream. Officials were continuing to investigate, with an avalanche in the upper reaches also cited as a possible cause.

At least five people—two women and three men—were reported missing, while no deaths or injuries had been confirmed. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said at least 82 people, including nine foreigners, had been rescued. The BBC, citing the army, reported that about 50 people were rescued from the riverbank.

The flood swept away about a dozen houses, two suspension footbridges and a steel road bridge, according to authorities and Nepal Police. Water and debris also damaged settlements and a hydropower project camp, carrying away construction equipment. Police said homes and sheds were inundated in Machhakhola, while buildings in Salleri were at risk.

Disaster officials received formal notice of the flood at about 6:20 a.m. and sent SMS warnings approximately 20 minutes later. Residents along the river were urged to evacuate to higher ground, while police and soldiers conducted rescue operations and officials surveyed the affected area by helicopter.
