New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a statewide disaster emergency on Monday as measles cases rose across the state, with 108 infections reported this year.
Since July 15, 92 cases have been recorded in 18 New York counties, Hochul said. The outbreak has spread through under-immunised rural communities, according to France 24.
The emergency order expands the range of health professionals permitted to administer measles-mumps-rubella vaccines. It also requires all MMR vaccinations to be reported within 72 hours to immunisation registries maintained by New York state or New York City.
Neighbouring Pennsylvania has reported 977 measles cases, many in rural counties near the New York border, Hochul said. France 24 reported that five people have died in the Pennsylvania outbreak.
