Two people were killed and 35 others injured when gunfire erupted early Sunday at a homecoming block party in Vienna, Georgia, authorities said.
Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy identified those killed as Jaquevion Jackson, 21, of Cordele, and Macaleb Jackson, 23, of Hawkinsville. Authorities did not say whether they were related. The injured ranged in age from 14 to 51 and were taken to several regional hospitals; some remained in critical condition Sunday evening.
More than 1,000 people had gathered for the party, which extended across several blocks and was not a school-sponsored event. Deputies patrolling nearby heard shots at about 1:25 a.m., according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Peavy said more than 50 shots were fired at two locations about a block apart. Officials said some victims suffered gunshot wounds, while others were injured amid the ensuing scramble, including people struck by vehicles.
No arrests had been announced, and investigators had not disclosed a possible motive. The GBI joined the investigation at the request of the Dooly County Sheriff’s Office, and autopsies were planned for both men killed.
