Polish police have detained a man suspected of planning an attack on Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, officials said.
Tusk announced the detention on social media and thanked police for their “swift and decisive action.” Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski also confirmed the arrest but provided no further details about the alleged plan.
According to BBC World, the suspect is a Polish national who was arrested in the Lower Silesia region. Special services spokesperson Jacek Dobrzynski said authorities considered the threat “deadly serious” and believed there was a strong likelihood it could be carried out.
Interior Ministry spokesperson Karolina Galecka said the State Protection Service, which is responsible for protecting senior officials, forwarded police an email containing information about possible attacks on Tusk and Kosiniak-Kamysz. Security services, police and Interior Ministry representatives convened a special meeting at the country’s counter-terrorism centre after receiving the information.
Authorities have not disclosed the alleged plan’s details or a possible motive.
