More than 300 people submitted nominations on the opening day of the campaign for seats on Hong Kong’s Election Committee, the body responsible for choosing the city’s leader.
The Registration and Electoral Office received 305 candidate nominations for the committee’s subsector elections, along with two nominations from designated bodies proposing committee members, the South China Morning Post reported. The nomination period runs until October 20, ahead of the November 22 election.
Registered subsector voters will elect up to 982 representatives to the 1,500-member committee. Those representatives will serve alongside 362 ex officio members and 156 members nominated by designated bodies.
The completed Election Committee is scheduled to select Hong Kong’s next chief executive in March next year. Several people seeking subsector seats declined to comment on whether current Chief Executive John Lee should serve a second term, saying their immediate focus was on securing votes in the committee election.
