Category 4 Hurricane Simon approaches Mexico’s Pacific coast

publishers 21articles 21first reported 9 Oct, 16:15 UTCdeveloping since 9 Oct · 11 editions

Hurricane Simon strengthened into a Category 4 storm as it approached Mexico’s west-central Pacific coast, bringing the threat of destructive winds, storm surge, flooding and landslides.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center reported sustained winds of at least 145 mph (230 kph), while later accounts put them near 155 mph (249 kph). The center said Simon could make landfall or skirt the coast late Saturday or early Sunday and urged residents in hurricane-warning areas to complete preparations immediately.

Forecasts called for 10 to 20 inches (25 to 50 centimeters) of rain across parts of southwestern Mexico, with isolated totals reaching 30 inches. The heaviest rainfall was expected along the Jalisco coast and in parts of Michoacán, Colima and Nayarit. The center warned that the rain could cause life-threatening flooding and mudslides, particularly in steep terrain.

Jalisco declared a red alert in several municipalities, suspended classes in 22 coastal municipalities and began evacuating people from vulnerable areas. Mexico’s navy evacuated about 100 people from coastal settlements. Puerto Vallarta’s airport suspended operations, while businesses boarded windows and placed sandbags at entrances. Authorities also directed hotels and other tourism businesses to move workers and visitors into shelters or safe areas.

Torrential rain associated with Simon had already caused flooding in Acapulco, farther south.
