A tiger that fatally attacked a man who entered its enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park will not be euthanised, the park said Sunday.
South Yorkshire Police received reports at about 1:35 p.m. Saturday that a man had entered the tiger enclosure at the park near Doncaster in northern England. Police said the animal subsequently attacked him, causing serious injuries. Despite treatment by emergency personnel, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The park was evacuated after the incident and remained closed Sunday. It said the tiger, named Altai, was safe and well, while staff affected by the death would receive specialist support. Police said the animal remained inside its enclosure, was uninjured and posed no wider danger to the public.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s entry into the enclosure. His family has been informed and is receiving support from specialist officers. Police also urged the public not to share distressing footage of the attack circulating online.
Ed Miliband, the MP for Doncaster North and Britain’s foreign secretary, expressed condolences to the man’s family and thanked park staff and emergency services for their response.
