Tankers attacked in Strait of Hormuz as Iran asserts control over shipping routes

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it attacked a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, accusing the vessel of using an unauthorized route as Tehran asserted control over traffic through the waterway.

In a statement carried by Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency, the IRGC identified the vessel as the *NV Sunshine*, described as a large liquefied petroleum gas carrier owned by NatWit. The Guards said it was struck while attempting to pass through a route south of the strait that Iran considered illegal.

Other Iranian reports described a crude-oil supertanker hitting a naval mine, causing an explosion and fire. The semi-official Tasnim news agency said the IRGC accused that vessel of turning off its navigation and positioning systems. It was not clear whether those accounts referred to the *NV Sunshine* or a separate incident.

Separately, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said an outbound tanker was hit on its port side by an unknown projectile, starting a fire. UKMTO reported that the crew was safe, while the extent of the damage and any environmental impact remained undetermined.

The IRGC said it was administering the strait and would act against ships that did not follow routes authorized by Iran. The attacks came amid stalled efforts to negotiate the reopening of the key Gulf shipping lane. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said negotiations could succeed only without “pressure and threats.”
