Bernadette Greene-Placentia, a Democratic candidate for Arizona’s 8th Congressional District, says she was raped in August while repairing a campaign sign in Sun City, north of Phoenix. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that she filed a report on Aug. 31 and said the investigation is ongoing.
Her campaign told ABC News the attack occurred around 2 a.m. on Aug. 14. Greene-Placentia said she was returning to her vehicle after fixing the sign when she was struck in the head and lost consciousness. CBS News, citing a police report, said she reported awakening while being held down and sexually assaulted by one man, followed by an alleged assault by a second man. The report said she recalled one of the men using a slur referring to her political affiliation.
Greene-Placentia told the Phoenix New Times that she informed her husband and campaign the following day and reported the assault about two weeks later. Her campaign said she decided to speak publicly so other survivors would know they are not alone, while asking that her privacy be respected.
Republican Rep. Abe Hamadeh, whom Greene-Placentia is seeking to unseat, called for authorities to investigate the allegations thoroughly, obtain any available camera footage and prosecute the crime. The sheriff’s office has not released further details about the investigation.
