A Mexican judge has found three men guilty of murdering Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson and their American friend Carter Rhoad during a 2024 surfing trip in Baja California.
Judge Raúl Hernández ruled Friday in Ensenada that Jesús Gerardo García, known as “El Kekas,” Irineo Francisco and Ángel Jesús were responsible for the killings. The court found that they acted with premeditation. CBS News and the Taipei Times reported that the defendants were also convicted of armed robbery and armed carjacking.
The three friends were camping near Punta San José on Mexico’s Pacific coast when they were attacked in late April 2024 in what prosecutors described as a robbery. Their bodies were recovered from a well on May 3, each with a gunshot wound to the head.
The victims’ relatives participated in the monthlong trial. “While no verdict can ever bring back our boys or ease the heartbreak of losing them,” the convictions marked “an important step towards justice and accountability,” Martin Robinson, father of Jake and Callum, said in a family statement.
The men have not yet been sentenced. Prosecutors requested 210 years in prison for each defendant, although the maximum sentence in Baja California is 60 years. CBS News reported that sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 16.
Ary Gisell Silva Raya, García’s former partner, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in November 2025 after admitting her role in instigating the robbery.
