Three Cockroach Janta Party leaders were released from preventive detention in Delhi on Sunday as demonstrations demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar continued for a second day.
Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were released after appearing before an executive magistrate, on the condition that they not breach the peace for one year, according to The Hindu. The CJP said it would continue protests across India over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
Around 200 people were detained Sunday amid protests at several locations in New Delhi, The Hindu reported. Those detained included student leader Neha Bora and Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP John Brittas. The CPI(M) alleged that police assaulted Brittas, while Bora alleged that detained protesters were abused and kicked. Police also prevented or dispersed gatherings in Mumbai, Pune and Goa, according to Scroll.in.
The Supreme Court, sitting Sunday, directed that people assembling peacefully should not be detained except according to law. It also told authorities to maintain normal Delhi Metro operations and avoid internet disruptions, subject to law-and-order requirements.
Delhi Police registered 20 cases connected to Saturday’s protest, officials told The Hindu. CJP leaders later wrote to police seeking a date and designated location for another peaceful demonstration, while calling for reduced security deployment and an end to what they described as illegal detentions and harassment of journalists.
