French police detained a 14-year-old student on Monday after the principal and a teacher were shot and wounded at Joseph Lakanal Middle School in Aubagne, near Marseille.
The student entered the school with a hunting firearm reportedly concealed in a guitar case and fired in a corridor before moving through the building, according to local officials and prosecutors. A staff member disarmed and restrained him before police arrived.
The principal and teacher were hospitalized with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Aubagne Mayor Jean-Pierre Squillari said no children were injured and that students were quickly confined and moved to safety. Police also said a third person was grazed during the shooting, Al Jazeera reported.
One student told Reuters that the first gunshot was initially mistaken for nearby construction noise. An alarm sounded after another blast, prompting students to flee toward the sports hall or outside.
The motive was not immediately known. Police and local officials said there was no apparent connection to recent protests over staffing and conditions at French high schools, and the Aubagne school had not been affected by blockades.
Education Minister Édouard Geffray and Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez were expected to visit the school later Monday.
