President Donald Trump has created a three-member committee to investigate allegations that Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook made false statements on mortgage documents and to recommend whether there is cause to remove her from office.
The committee consists of National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Chair Andrea R. Lucas and acting Office of Government Ethics Director Keith Sonderling. According to the presidential memorandum, it will hold a private, transcribed hearing at the White House on Nov. 5 to consider the allegations and evidence.
Cook may attend with a lawyer, submit a written position statement and present arguments, documents and witness statements. The committee may question her and will later report its recommendation to Trump, who will make the final decision. CNBC reported that Cook may submit follow-up material through Nov. 10 and that no deadline has been set for Trump’s decision.
Cook’s lawyers, Abbe Lowell and Norm Eisen, said she welcomes an opportunity to present the facts and maintains that she did not commit mortgage fraud. They also questioned whether the proceeding would be impartial, citing Trump’s previous statements that he intended to remove her.
Trump first sought to dismiss Cook in 2025 after Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte accused her of misrepresenting information about two properties before she joined the Fed. Cook sued, and courts allowed her to remain in office while the dispute continued. The Supreme Court later said she was entitled to notice of the evidence and an opportunity to respond before any removal.
