YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was released early Sunday after being detained at his Gurugram home on Saturday ahead of a protest in central Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The Hindu reported that Gurugram Crime Branch released Rathee around 2 a.m. and that police filed no charges against him. The Indian Express, citing PTI, said three Crime Branch teams detained him at about 6 a.m. Saturday and questioned him for roughly an hour. A police source said Rathee could face further detention or legal action if he attempted to reach Jantar Mantar despite prohibitory orders.
In a video posted after his release, Rathee alleged that plainclothes officers had “kidnapped” him and held him without formally arresting or detaining him. He also displayed his passport while rejecting claims that he was not an Indian citizen and said he had intended to join the demonstration.
Police had denied permission for the protest, organised by the Cockroach Janta Party and Left-affiliated student groups over alleged irregularities involving the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. Authorities imposed extensive restrictions and detained protesters attempting to reach Jantar Mantar. Reports placed the number detained at more than 6,000 or 7,000, including opposition leaders, activists and CJP organisers.
Bharatiya Kisan Union members also protested in western Uttar Pradesh. Delhi Police detained a delegation led by BKU national general secretary Yudhvir Singh while it travelled toward Jantar Mantar. Several CJP leaders were subsequently released, some following a Delhi court order.
