Pakistan’s federal government has imposed governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, suspending the provincial administration led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party and transferring executive authority to Governor Faisal Karim Kundi.
An emergency was also declared in 12 districts under Article 232 of the Constitution, while governor’s rule was imposed under Article 234. The affected areas include eight merged tribal districts as well as Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Bannu and Lakki Marwat. The federal government also authorized the deployment of army personnel and assets in support of civilian authorities.
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar said the action was intended to combat terrorism and was not politically motivated. The Cabinet cited what it called the provincial government’s “deliberate disengagement from the fight against terrorism.” PTI and the federal government had recently clashed over counterterrorism policy, contributing to the collapse of talks between them.
Reuters reported that provincial leaders from Khan’s party had been detained, while Dawn said scores of PTI workers were held in districts including Shangla and Charsadda. There were also reports that Chief Minister Sohail Afridi had been arrested.
Security measures disrupted daily life across the province. Police and shipping containers blocked major roads in Peshawar, educational institutions closed in several cities and some examinations were postponed. Internet and cellular service, initially disrupted, was later restored in Peshawar.
