Pakistan’s federal government took direct control of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday after President Asif Ali Zardari declared an emergency and suspended the provincial administration led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party.
Acting on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s advice, Zardari invoked constitutional Articles 232(1) and 234(1), citing increased terrorist attacks, deteriorating law and order and a breakdown of constitutional governance. Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, provincial ministers and other senior officials were ordered to leave office. Governor Faisal Karim Kundi will administer the province with an advisory council, while Parliament assumes the provincial assembly’s powers. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said the arrangement could remain in place for six months.
The Interior Ministry also authorized army personnel and assets to support civilian authorities for the duration of the emergency. According to Dawn, the deployment is intended to protect residents, property and government installations, with troop levels to be determined by the governor in consultation with military headquarters.
The decision followed PTI-led marches demanding Khan’s release from prison and collapsed talks over a planned march to Islamabad. A federal interior minister said Monday that Afridi had been detained. Roads were blocked and security tightened in Peshawar after the declaration.
Federal officials accused the PTI administration of failing to curb militancy. PTI rejected that allegation, blamed inadequate federal funding and equipment, and condemned the emergency as undemocratic.
