Nepali rescue operations continued Monday after a landslide blocked the Budhi Gandaki River in Gorkha district, unleashing flooding that swept away homes, bridges and hiking trails. Five villagers remained out of contact, but authorities had reported no fatalities.
The army said 96 people, including nine foreigners, had been rescued by Monday as floodwaters receded. More than 100 foreign trekkers remained stranded at several locations because sections of a popular route through the Manaslu Conservation Area had been washed away, project official Bhuwan Raj Ojha told Reuters. He said trekkers were safe at restaurants and tea houses, and those wishing to leave would need assistance.
Officials said the flood followed a landslide Sunday in Chumnubri village, about 100 kilometers west of Kathmandu, which temporarily blocked the river before water surged downstream. Authorities warned communities along the river in Gorkha and several downstream districts to evacuate.
The flooding swept away about a dozen houses, suspension bridges and a highway bridge linking Gorkha and Dhading districts. National disaster authorities said three hydroelectric plants were also damaged.
The Budhi Gandaki is a tributary of the Trishuli River. The latest flooding follows an August disaster in another tributary that killed at least 1,455 people and left more than 5,200 missing. Nepal has ended active search-and-rescue operations for victims of that earlier flood and shifted to recovery and rehabilitation work.
