Eight people, including two children, were shot and killed at a home in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Friday, and the suspected attacker was also found dead, authorities and local media reported.
Police were called to the residence at about 5 p.m. following reports of gunfire. Responding officers found two women fatally shot in the street after witnesses reported seeing an armed man outside the property before he entered the home.
The incident developed into a standoff as police and tactical teams surrounded the residence and ordered the suspect to come out. Officers heard further gunshots from inside before entering, where they found six additional victims, including the children, and the suspected gunman. Police said the suspect appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah described the circumstances as “deeply disturbing” and said he had not witnessed anything comparable in more than 28 years. The city said the situation had been contained and there was no continuing threat to the public.
Authorities were investigating the circumstances of the shooting and had not announced a motive. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said Saturday that he had offered the state administration’s full support to Erie Mayor Daria Devlin.
