Riyadh airport struck again after deadly Houthi attack

publishers 44articles 51first reported 7 Oct, 09:00 UTCdeveloping since 7 Oct · 14 editions

An unidentified projectile struck Terminal 4 at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Sunday, starting a fire and killing one person while injuring 11, according to Saudi civil aviation authorities. The Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen’s Houthis said air defenses also intercepted and destroyed a cruise missile near the airport.

The strike came less than a day after a missile hit the airport on Saturday. Later reports put the death toll from that attack at 13, including Saudi citizens and foreign nationals, with more than 300 people wounded. Airport operations remained suspended on Sunday while authorities assessed damage and checked the safety of facilities. Saudi authorities also moved schools in Riyadh online.

The Houthis claimed responsibility for attacks on Riyadh’s airport and said they had also targeted King Fahd International Airport in Dammam and two Saudi Aramco facilities with ballistic and cruise missiles and drones. Saudi authorities confirmed an attack at Dammam airport and said inspections were underway, but the reported strikes on the Aramco sites were not independently confirmed.

The Houthis warned airlines, airport workers and passengers against using Saudi airports and airspace. Britain and the United States issued aviation or travel advisories, while Malaysia urged citizens to postpone non-essential Umrah travel. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Pakistan and Türkiye jointly condemned the attacks and called for their immediate halt.
